The Society of Friends and Sponsors of BESSY bestows every year the Innovation Award in the field of procurement and usage of synchrotron radiation. The award is to be granted for an excellent achievement which has contributed significantly to the further development of techniques, methods or uses of synchrotron radiation. Scientists and engineers from research institutions, universities, and industrial establishments within Europe are addressed.
The 2004 award was bestowed upon Ernst Bauer, Andreas Oelsner, and Gerd Schönhense for their eminent contributions on innovative developments of the photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM) as an energy-, spatial-, and time-resolving detection instrument.
Andreas Oelsner and Gerd Schönhense are co-founders of Surface Concept and developed the time-resolving TOF-PEEM on the detection basis of a delayline detector.
